As he breaks his silence, so will I

Now that my father broke his silence and it seems like OPINION matters, let me share mine.

What happened to the days when we needed media to speak up for the truth? What happened to the days when we trusted our media to tell us unbiased facts?

I graduated with a Development Communication degree, and our school taught us to always be moral and two-sided. The fact that one network used the word “raid” with the word “breaking news” and with just a photo of a logbook for evidence made me doubt, made US doubt everything that they had to say. I don’t think reporters have the right to tell their opinion, especially to matters like that. theyre suppose to report FACTS. Theyre suppose to REPORT. PERIOD.

To be honest, I am quite upset that my father resigned from his post. Its not because he’ll be at home all the time, but because he’s come so far, he’s done so much, and for what? I keep asking myself why he gave up on the People so easily? I keep asking myself why couldn’t he hold on any longer? I was so proud of him, actually, WE ARE SO PROUD OF HIM. He kept silent. He let the people think for themselves as different facts were unravelled as each day passes. And after all that bad news, he was the only one smiling at home.

But again, I guess a man of his age would know when to step down. When to say that its enough. I guess its when he saw his siblings and mother getting upset for him, his wife getting stressed out for him, and his children affected for him. I guess its when he realized that the only way he can be against the media is not to speak at all, and NOT give them answers. I guess its when he learned from the bus incident that no matter what he says, the media will turn it in a way that he is still to blame. But really, if you ask yourself, if you really REALLY think about it, WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE WHO KEEP TRYING TO PUT HIM DOWN?

Our family never once used this so called “power” or “unique relationship” with the President for our advantage. We still live in the same house, we have the same crew, the same cars, and the same standard of living. We still prefer staying at home and eating lunch on Sundays. We live simply, and we will die simple. My father is not a politician and we are not a political family. We serve the Filipino people because like the president, believe in his daang matuwid life. And so I ask again, WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS POSITION NOW THAT HE HAS LEFT?

And to you, you know who you are, as I will call you Mr. Man, you may look good, you may have good intentions, but how dare you, enter our home, eat our food, and mingle with our family, only to what? WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO YOU TO DESERVE THIS KIND OF TREATMENT? How do you sleep at night knowing that you are ruining a man’s life only to reach a certain position? And to that specific network, you may be the most popular network now, but if the People finally realize how you CHOOSE to report on NEWS like that, and if you CHOOSE to do it JUST BECAUSE ONE OF YOUR STAFF is related to somebody, shame on you, and shame on the way you report and ruin people’s lives. I CAN NEVER TRUST YOU, AND SO WILL OTHER PEOPLE.

And to the people who were there by our side, and who are still here with us, THANK YOU. Thank you so much for the support, for the love, and for all the prayers. It made us stronger each day. It made us believe that we still had our “kakampi” with us. It made us wake up each day knowing that our true friends are here for us.

Lastly, thank you for Papa's security. You have all been part of this mess, and yet you are still there to protect him for us. You kept him safe for us, you let us sleep better every time he goes home safe. thank you so much, and although we are truly sad that you are to leave your post, i hope you know that we all treat you as our extended family.

BUT THEN AGAIN, THIS ONLY AN OPINION.

let this help you!

Rico E. Puno, sa munting bagay pong ito maibalik po namin ang mabubuting itinanim nyo sa aming mga mumunting tao. they can never put a good and better man down!

    1. Pres. Aquino’s trust and confidence on Puno has not wavered, invoking the “ innocent until proven guilty” principle.

  2. Now you know what are friends for.

Let me tell you a quote by Ann Richards, the former Texas Governor; "I've always said that in politics, your enemies can't hurt you, but your friends will kill you".

  3. This is simple. It is being responsible for one's action. If your dad had just taken command responsibility for th Hong Kong fiasco, even if he was not directly responsibility, he would have earned people's respect. But by not doing that, he made the people think the President was protecting him. And that started the downfall of his reputation. He may be innocent, but his actions made people think otherwise. Remember, in politics, perception is reality.

  4. "This country has been ravaged by broken promises by its leaders. People have died for these ideals. The least public servants can do is to be statesmen themselves and speak their truth - no matter the cost, no matter the perceived unfairness.

There is such a thing as editorial and opinionated discourse in media. Though we expect them to wield the sword of truth at all times it would be naive for
these politicians to think that this will be always the case. Although it is true that the media sensationalize its news, the Filipino can also think for himself and decide for himself. All these politicians needed to do was speak, bare themselves and come clean.

The phrase "your silence condemns you" is very true. If you will not speak for yourself then who will. And the public servant owes the people every bit of truth."

    1. Very well said Pinoy Tekkie. And if I may add to that, how could an ordinary person form an unbiased opinion if all the information he gets is from one side only. He should have spoken his own truth right from the start. But he spoke just too late. For an ordinary person like me, my impression is why did it take too long for him to speak up? Is it because he still has to weave his tales? Am sorry, but that is just how it seems to me.

    2. Can we blame the hapless Puno for the crash? Hardly.

Robredo had earlier booked a commercial flight for Manila. Robredo made a spur-of-the-moment decision to charter the ill-fated plane to fly direct to Naga City from Cebu. How does one plan a plane sabotage on such short notice?

  5. What's sad in the society is that many people will judge based on vary little information that they have. yes the media should be careful.

The truth is his best shield, not a finger pointing daughter!

  10. The funny thing about Filipinos is questioning-why a leader that they voted for would choose the people whom he trusts, respects, and believes can do the job to work for him! isn't that so pathetic. If I am tasked to handle a business, I would also want to choose yung mga taong kilala ko na magtrabaho and the people that I trust the most. Why will I work with people I don't trust? I don't care if you are the best politician one can have. If I can't work with you to carry out my plans and dreams for the countries, then I might as well choose someone who might not have the medals and honors you have but would know how to work with me. If you trust you leader, which I assume, kasi un ang binoto nila eh. They want Aquino to be the president. Thus, if you trust Aquino, trust his discretion in choosing the people that he likes to work with. If he chose to work with Usec Puno, then let him do such. We're impeding the platform of the president. Pagdami ng opinion, pag gulo. Let the president run the country and let's just support and help him out in doing so. Di talaga matanggal ung crab mentality kaya walang asenso. Nakakadepress lang talaga ang media sa atin. Feeling nila mas powerful pa sila sa government. Parang ang church, feeling nila they are more powerful than the government. The president should go out of his comfort zone to correct all these society flaws.. and it should start with the media who put corrupts people minds. Wag ka na maconscious Pres. AQUINO if in your effort to discipline the media, they might accuse you of corrupting the democracy that your parents fought decades ago. We all know that everything should have their limits. If democracy and freedom is being used to kill people, steal, destroy peace and orderliness (which what the media is doing now), then you have to make a stand that this is not what your parents fought for. This is not the kind of democracy that your parents want. Umaabuso naman kasi ang everyone is hiding under the DEMOCRACY BLANKET. Kaya naman, democratic talagang pumatay, magnakaw sa broad day light ha, or manira ng reputasyon ng isang tao. If they won't hide under the DEMOCRACY BLANKET (or freedom of speech if I may say), they'll hide under the reasoning of "Mahirap ang buhay kaya ganun". As we think, so we behave ika nga. So kung laging ganun ang eksena, then lagi na lang tayong tama, lagi na lang valid ang mga rason. Wala ng makukulong, wala ng mapaparusahan. This is where we're at now- we are destroying our own country, our own Presidnet, our economy, our lives and our children's life. Then after doing all these- we point our fingers back to the government and blame them as if they are not doing their jobs? Have we done ours? Sorry that this comment took this long. I don't know your father but I heard all the news about him and I admire his courage and loyalty to the President and to the president's platform. Do not let these myopic people put you and your family down. Trust in God alone and He'll save you from all these wrath. God bless you and your family.

  11. I have no patience for mob mentalities fomented by rabid media dogs. Politics, at best, is a dirty business despite all lofty ideals and noble intents. An opinionated style of tabloid journalism can do nothing to further ideals and intents, but can only aggrandize the scum and sludge that grease the Philippine political system.

I am humbled by men of integrity like your father. He was called to serve, and he did... when he was attacked and questioned for doing his job, perhaps he felt he was no longer able to do the job of serving the people. As a public servant, he is answerable to "taong masa", but when an irresponsible media has slanted the facts and jaded truth to the point where the common man is manipulated into demonizing a good person... it is no longer a tenable position.

The acceptance of your father's resignation simply took back the invitation to serve our country and our people. His integrity is intact. Your father and your family may be under terrible stress, but the fact remains (and it will become even more painfully obvious in the near future) that our government has lost yet another valuable servant of the people.
